YOUTH SEXUAL HEALTH
Our youth sexual health education curriculum includes medically accurate, developmentally appropriate, and culturally relevant content and skills that target key behavioral outcomes and promote healthy sexual development.
Our service
We support Eastern Bay of Plenty education providers with a comprehensive programme focusing on ‘Relationship and Sexual Education’ for young people, who attend secondary school or an alternative education facility. The programme material aligns with the New Zealand education curriculum and is age appropriate.

• Body Image/Media

• Contraception & Abortion

Our Youth Sexual Health Educator will facilitate the programme.

Secondary Schools –
Our Youth Sexual Health Educator will “Train-the-Trainer” and empower staff to deliver sexual health education material to students.

Free Youth Sexual Health Services Available

At Secondary Schools or Alternative Education Facilities
Students can visit the school nurse if there is one available at their school. The nurse can refer students to a doctor if needed.
At General Practices
Free youth sexual health clinic is available for registered patients aged under 26 years at the following General Practices:
• Ōhope Beach Medical Centre
• Med Central
• Riverslea Medical Centre
• Tāneatua Medical Centre
• Church Street Surgery
• Toi Ora Health
• Whakatōhea Health Centre
• Kawerau Medical Centre
• Tarawera Health Centre

Other doctor’s surgeries in the Eastern Bay of Plenty may offer free sexual health services for enrolled patients aged under 26 years. Please enquire with them directly.

At Pharmacies
Free emergency contractive pill (ECP) is available at all Pharmacies free to under 26-year-olds.
At Whakatāne Hospital
Clinic 1 – Sexual Health Service

Clinic 1 is a free and confidential service, available for all ages, based at Whakatāne Hospital.
They offer contraception, pregnancy tests, sexual health check-ups, treatments, advice and information.

Opening Times –

Monday: 2pm to 4.30pm.
This is an Appointment Clinic. Any appointments that are not booked at our Monday clinic will be available for drop ins, but this is subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed.

Wednesday afternoons: 12 midday to 4.30pm.
This is a mainly a Drop-In Clinic with limited spaces, so it’s first in, first seen. There are a limited number of pre-booked appointments available. These will become drop-in appointments if not booked before the start of the clinic.

Thursday afternoons: 12.30pm to 3.30pm.
This is an Appointment Clinic. Any appointments that are not booked at our Thursday clinic will be available for drop ins, but this is subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed.

Fridays: 9am to 3pm.
This is an Appointment Clinic. Any appointments that are not booked at our Friday clinic will be available for drop ins, but this is subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed.
